- ➤ Residents in Salinas and Monterey can enjoy free holiday events starting tomorrow with a parade of lights on Main Street at 6 p.m. — on Dec 5, the Boronda Adobe will host a festive open house with food and music, followed by a lighted boat parade on Dec 7, Country Christmas at the Salinas Sports Complex on Dec 11, a YOSAL winter concert on Dec 12, and Christmas festivities at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy on Dec 13 and Dec 14. - ➤ The free Salinas Holiday Parade of Lights will start Sunday at 6 p.m. at South Main and Acacia and end near the City Center around 8 p.m. Local business owner Esteban Garcia, who has run the parade for ten years—this year featuring 85% children and strong local volunteer support—said the event is meant to kick off the holiday season. - ➤ A 3.4-magnitude earthquake shook near San Juan Bautista on Friday morning at 7:40 a.m.—two smaller quakes of 2.5 and 2.6 followed moments later with no damage or injuries reported. KSBW

- ➤ Black Friday brought thousands of shoppers to Northridge Mall in Salinas yesterday to grab discounts of up to 75%—a local shopper said the mall had never been this busy. Business managers noted improved sales compared to past years even as overall spending declined and some questioned if the deals really saved money. KSBW

- ➤ The King Tides Project has asked the public to submit photos of coastal conditions as king tides are forecast to inundate beaches, roads and coastal areas from Dec 4-6 and Jan 2-3. Photos will help researchers and officials plan for future sea level rise—residents in Monterey will also have a chance to join an event at Asilomar State Beach on Dec 6 where staff and lifeguards will offer free coffee and tea. - ➤ Supplemental Security Income recipients in California will get two payments this December—one arriving on December 1 and the January payment being paid on December 31—with Social Security recipients possibly receiving a third payment based on their birthday schedule.
