  • LEAP Institute launched its 'Green Raiteros' rideshare program in Pajaro to help farmworkers and low-income families get to medical appointments using electric cars and vans. The new service now serves Santa Cruz and Monterey counties—expanding from six counties already and tracking usage with weekly check-ins.  KSBW

  • The Walmart Supercenter at 1375 N. Davis Rd. completed a storewide remodel on Oct. 24 that added new flooring, updated fixtures, upgraded Pharmacy and Vision Centers, a new Mother’s Room, a local-inspired mural, re-decorated restrooms and extra check-out registers—promising to boost holiday shopping.  The Californian

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cooper-Morela Adobe Museum finished a $1 million restoration project in July that fixed its balcony and sunroom and upgraded the gift shop — the work was funded by a 2022 National Park Services grant and the National Trust for Historical Preservation.  Monterey Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said that the commercial Dungeness crab season is delayed because whales and leatherback sea turtles are nearby, so it will not start on Nov. 1. Recreational crab fishing will open on Nov. 1 along the Central Coast and Monterey Bay with restrictions—traps are limited and hoop nets must be checked, while fishing in Northern California is banned due to unhealthy levels of domoic acid.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and teachers from Monterey County gathered yesterday for Misinformation Day to learn how to Spot fake news. York School student Esther Spaulding — who helped guide the hands-on activities — played a key role during the event.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carmel Beach at Ocean Avenue was closed after an 850-gallon sewage spill occurred on Wednesday due to damage from utility work; crews repaired the pipe on Thursday (40-50 gallons reached the tide pool) and officials are testing the water (reopening will follow once safety is confirmed).  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office opened a Re-Entry Resource Center in Salinas to help former inmates access community resources. A state law will expand birth centers after nearly 60 hospital maternity wards closed in the past decade—official reports show a growing need for maternal care.  KAZU
