➤ Salinas hosted the 44th California International Airshow this past weekend even though the Blue Angels did not appear due to a government shutdown — organizers hired new civilian acts such as historic stunt pilots and planes used in past events. Executive director Harry Wardwell said the show raised money for local charities — noting it has given nearly $9 million since 1981. Monterey Herald

➤ Dudley Bynoe, a San Jose firefighter who fought for social justice, died on Christmas Day leaving many untold stories of courage. His wife, Linda Turner Bynoe, published his book — They Call Me Trusty: A Black Firefighter’s Fight for Social Justice — to honor his legacy and share his message, with it available in July. ➤ The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District hosted a countywide Special Olympics soccer competition at Seaside High on Friday, October 3, with eight elementary schools competing in games and skills challenges.
