Salinas hosted the 44th California International Airshow this past weekend even though the Blue Angels did not appear due to a government shutdown — organizers hired new civilian acts such as historic stunt pilots and planes used in past events.

Executive director Harry Wardwell said the show raised money for local charities — noting it has given nearly $9 million since 1981.
