ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sea Otter Awareness Week began yesterday—running through September 27—to teach residents about sea otters that help keep kelp forests balanced and support the coastal ecosystem.  KSBW
  • Nearly 1,300 volunteers from Save Our Shores cleaned trash from beaches, rivers and parks on the Central Coast over the weekend — their work spanned 58 sites.  KAZU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas City Council will vote Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Rotunda on whether to reinstate rent stabilization and three other renter protection ordinances after a previous repeal was challenged. Only two council members from the 2024 vote remain — supporters say the delay may help tenants and landlords reach a compromise.  Monterey Herald

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Tom Karwin said his garden surprised him today when his pineapple mountain flower, Ochagavia litoralis, bloomed for the first time since 2018—cooler summer weather may have triggered the rare bloom. He will divide and replant the many rosettes after the blossom fades to help create more displays in the future.  Monterey Herald

  • Doug Barron birdied the last three holes—winning the Pure Insurance Championship by one shot at Pebble Beach on Sunday for his fourth senior title. He posted a 6-under 66 while his competitors fell behind on the final stretch.  Monterey Herald
