CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On June 27, staff at Salinas Valley State Prison observed cellmates (26-year-old Jose Rodriguez and 36-year-old Steven Miranda) with Rodriguez found unresponsive after 3:30 p.m. and pronounced dead after 5 p.m., leading investigators to treat his death as a homicide and place Miranda in restricted housing. - ➤ A 28-year-old Salinas man, Cosme Ramos, pleaded guilty on June 26th to robbery and sexual assault charges from a gas station incident on October 13th—charges that count as strikes under the three strikes law—and will be sentenced on October 14th to 45 years in prison with a lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender. - ➤ Soledad Unified School District announced it received $2.7 million to turn two high schools into full-service community schools over the next five years. Soledad High will expand behavioral health services and college programs while Pinnacles High will boost social-emotional learning and credit recovery support (the grant comes from the California Community Schools Partnership Program) as the district joins a network focused on equity and whole-child development.
