CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On June 27, staff at Salinas Valley State Prison observed cellmates (26-year-old Jose Rodriguez and 36-year-old Steven Miranda) with Rodriguez found unresponsive after 3:30 p.m. and pronounced dead after 5 p.m., leading investigators to treat his death as a homicide and place Miranda in restricted housing. - ➤ A 28-year-old Salinas man, Cosme Ramos, pleaded guilty on June 26th to robbery and sexual assault charges from a gas station incident on October 13th—charges that count as strikes under the three strikes law—and will be sentenced on October 14th to 45 years in prison with a lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Soledad Unified School District announced it received $2.7 million to turn two high schools into full-service community schools over the next five years. Soledad High will expand behavioral health services and college programs while Pinnacles High will boost social-emotional learning and credit recovery support (the grant comes from the California Community Schools Partnership Program) as the district joins a network focused on equity and whole-child development. - ➤ The Monterey County Agriculture Commissioner announced that the 2024 Ag report showed strawberries reached nearly $5 billion in product value with a 14.7 percent increase from last year (they topped other crops on more than 11 thousand acres). He said county officials are testing artificial intelligence to help with tasks like weeding while keeping workers in their jobs. KION
- ➤ Caltrans announced that both lanes on Highway 1 at Rocky Creek will reopen tonight at 8 p.m.—ending a 15-month closure that began with a landslide on March 30th, which forced drivers to use convoys. Local business owners expect smoother travel and a boost in traffic ahead of the 4th of July holiday as the $15.4 million project marks an engineering milestone for this key route. KION

- ➤ Team Swiss Raw finished a 2,800-mile row race from Monterey to Hanalei Bay in 25 days, 2 hours, and 21 minutes, breaking the old record by 4.5 days.
