COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pajaro residents finished a 22-hour Spanish-language CERT training over three Sundays in March to help during emergencies and assist Santa Cruz and Monterey counties—after surviving the 2023 floods.  KION

CRIME NEWS

  • A 55-year-old Seaside woman was injured in a deputy-involved crash today in Salinas when an MCSO patrol car with its emergency lights on Blanco Road collided at the Davis and Blanco intersection with her Audi—causing her car to hit a pole—and both she and a deputy—who was driving the patrol vehicle—were taken to hospital as investigators work to determine the cause.  KION

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 5, the city announced a new street sweeping schedule – with 'no parking' signs for streets like Acosta Plaza, Montana Street, and Alma Avenue – which will be enforced after the grace period ends on July 31. Some residents worry that the plan may worsen parking shortages while others believe it will improve street cleanliness.  KION
  • Monterey County Supervisor Chris Lopez was appointed by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas to the California Coastal Commission last week to bring a pro-housing perspective from local agricultural areas. He held his first commission meeting on May 21 and will serve until May 2029 — aiming to bridge the gap between farm communities and coastal development.  The Californian
  • Two Monterey County agencies, the Monterey County Water Resources Agency & the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency, are partnering to monitor groundwater levels, quality and pump rates in Salinas Valley to prevent state intervention and protect the local agriculture economy. They will use the collected data to meet California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act requirements before the 2040 deadline.  KSBW
  • California Highway Patrol said it will begin a maximum enforcement period for Memorial Day weekend to target impaired drivers, reckless behavior, and those not buckling up. The crackdown runs from 6:01 p.m. on May 23 until 11:59 p.m. on May 26 after 42 fatalities and over 1,100 DUI arrests were recorded last Memorial Day weekend.  KSBW
  • Monterey-Salinas Transit will restart free trolley service this Memorial Day weekend, running daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from May 24 to Labor Day for rides departing from Downtown Parking Garages on Tyler and Del Monte Avenue (serving Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, Downtown Monterey, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium).  KION

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday at Gilroy High at 3 p.m., the CCS track and field finals will list projected finishes for Pacific Coast Athletic League athletes in races and field events. Notable projections include Clara Adams (North Salinas) defending her wins in the 400 and 200, and Izaak Ocampo of Pajaro Valley aiming to become the first from his school to qualify for state meet.  Monterey Herald
  • Seven local high school wrestlers won state titles at the California State Duals yesterday. Keira Siason won the Greco Roman title at 110 pounds while Brianna Ochoa, Areli Rodriguez, Olivia Gott, Jason Valencia, Fabian Martienz, and Diego Rodriguez earned top finishes in their divisions — showing strong competitive results across the meet.  Monterey Herald
