Monterey police arrested 22-year-old Abdalsalam Assad after a traffic stop on Wednesday for a loud, modified exhaust — officers found an assault rifle in a black trash bag with a magazine holding 30 rounds — and he was booked into Monterey County Jail.

Monterey County officials announced that a reallocation of $3.1 million in state grant funds will cover flood-related damage to the 1850s-era Vallejo Mansion in Pajaro, which housed the town's only library branch before floods in March 2023 left it vacant.
