- ➤ The county announced plans to restore the historic Porter Vallejo Mansion into a new library and community space in Pajaro — the only county-owned building in the area — with a $7.1 million project set to start in May. The renovation will include cleaning up flood debris, fixing the HVAC system, and adding ADA lifts — a plan developed from community meetings — so more people can use the space. KION

- ➤ Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s new $50 million high-tech research vessel David Packard arrived in Moss Landing yesterday to help scientists study underwater robots, great white sharks and glowing jellyfish. It is named for a Silicon Valley pioneer who donated over $1 billion to ocean research. Monterey Herald
- ➤ Conservationist Jane Goodall led sold-out sea otter safaris on a full catamaran at Elkhorn Slough last month to help restore the sea otter population along Monterey Bay. She said otters help by eating sea urchins (Hope for Sea Otters) and protecting kelp forests (Wildlife Conservation Sea Otter Fund). Monterey Herald

- ➤ Californians can check their driver's licenses for a bear with a star to see if they have a REAL ID. After May 7, travelers over 18 who do not have a REAL ID or another TSA-approved ID will face delays and extra screening at airports. The Californian
- ➤ County supervisors met on March 25 to talk about a $39.7 million deficit and more than $121.1 million in funding requests, with the biggest being a $30 million ask from the Sheriff’s Department — they focused on keeping current staff and looked at other funds like Measure AA. They will hold formal budget hearings on May 28-29 — steps meant to plan for cuts and manage rising costs. Monterey County Now
