COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Dec. 12, the Monterey chapter of Veterans for Peace held a rally outside the Naval Postgraduate School following a graduation ceremony. The group urged service members to follow their conscience by declining orders that conflict with the law and Constitution and distributed red, white and blue roses as a peace gesture.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salinas City Elementary School District hosted its first Computer Science Showcase at Boronda Meadows Elementary on Dec. 10, featuring student work, interactive demos, and fun activities for families. The event offered a hands-on opportunity to explore and spark interest in computer science.  The Californian
  • The Pajaro Valley Unified School District approved plans to lay off 160 full-time positions after a 19% enrollment drop, losing over 3,400 students and $53 million in revenue, with notices set for late March. The district will combine part-time roles into full-time positions — a move union leaders opposed.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The California Fish and Game Commission voted Thursday to extend the abalone harvesting ban in Northern California until 2036 due to declining red abalone populations and environmental challenges (the longest extension since the 2018 closure).  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas awarded Precision Construction Services a $2,230,401 contract to begin the final phase of renovations at Sherwood Rec Center. The project will transform the Old Municipal Swimming Pool building into a multi-use facility.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monterey Bay FC signed California native Stuart Ritchie as their new defender for the upcoming season. The 24-year-old, who played for One Knoxville SC and the San Jose Earthquakes Academy, brings valuable experience to shore up the club's defense.  Monterey Herald
