ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A garage fire on Sunday, Dec. 7 along West Rossi Street severely damaged a home that housed 13 people, displacing the family while neighbors fought the flames and Laurel Wood Elementary collected donations (including clothes and essentials) as the Fire Department continues its investigation and the Red Cross provides aid.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Salinas officials report that scammers are charging residents $50 to $150 for free consulate appointments — local immigration attorney Blanca Zarazua and the Consulate of Mexico in San Jose now offer limited free services every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at her office to help those in need.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A $12 billion federal farm bailout did little for small-scale Central Coast growers, excluding many fruit and vegetable producers, plus a new cohousing community is set to begin planning in Santa Cruz.  KAZU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SPCA Monterey County is hosting two one-day youth camps over the school break. Happy Howlidays & Winter Whiskers will run this Saturday at the Claire Jacobson Learning Center to teach kids about animal care — while Junior Vet Day set for Jan. 3 will let participants learn about veterinary work.  Monterey Herald
