Pilates is growing popular along the Central Coast—with Latria Pilates opening in Salinas at the end of September to blend fitness and faith and Redwood Pilates having opened its Watsonville studio in January and a second in Marina last month.

Both studios offer reformer Pilates workouts that use mat and machine exercises and include a special class on Sundays at Latria Pilates.

Local expert Tom Karwin—who writes his fall gardening column—explains how gardeners can prune and propagate roses this season.

He advises trimming spent clusters and cutting canes above outward-facing buds while noting that climbers need support and that Pearl Harbor Day on Dec. 7 signals the start of annual rose care.

An analysis from Zumper showed that Salinas apartment rents rose 4% from last year's median rent ($2,295) to $2,393 in October.

The report covers listings (for studios to four-bedroom units) and finds prices are 10% below the state median and 26% above the national median.
