COMMUNITY NEWS

  • From Friday through Sunday, the 805 Night Market will open at Northridge Mall in front of Planet Fitness in Salinas—visitors must RSVP for free entry with children 5 and under entering at no charge—and will offer over 40 food vendors, carnival games, beer, music and a $10 parking fee.  KSBW
  • Greenfield held its first-ever Veterans Day parade after Salinas cancelled its event — crowds joined to honor local veterans while Soledad held an honorary ceremony and King City's VFW hosted a BBQ. Organizers said they will make the event annual as veterans and civilians expressed their appreciation.  KSBW
  • Yesterday, the Veterans Transition Center in Marina honored homeless veterans by offering free services such as reading glasses, eye and hearing tests, and haircuts — resource booths provided essential support. Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado noted the nonprofit, established in 1996 and housing nearly 200 veterans, recently opened a 70-unit complex to assist low-income veterans.  KSBW
  • A ribbon-cutting last Thursday reopened Tatum’s Garden playground—Monterey County’s first fully accessible playground—at 1 Maryal Drive in Salinas. The donor-funded renovations show a commitment to giving all children a safe place to play.  KSBW
  • Today marks the start of Community Foundation Week—an event that highlights the Monterey County Foundation's work in funding local programs such as legal aid, food banks, and education—and will also see the launch of new initiatives like the Thrive grant program and Monterey County Gives! The Foundation granted $45 million in 2024 and now manages nearly $450 million in assets across 900 funds, showing its growing impact on the community.  Monterey Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office fined The Growers Company, Inc. $125K for letting 93 workers enter a lettuce field treated with pesticides less than 24 hours earlier—66 workers became sick and a felony charge was filed against a supervisor who has since died.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County is expanding its veteran hiring policy to offer more local opportunities. Hollister airport signed a lease with a flying-car company—its move may spark new tech interest in the community.  KAZU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Palma swept Oakland Tech with scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-14 to open the CIF State Northern California Division V volleyball tournament—coach Ivan Garcia said the win gives the team confidence as they prepare to face Hilmar next.  Monterey Herald
  • Isaak Hernandez from Salinas football rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys' come-from-behind win over Alisal, earning Preps of the Week recognition—while Ashley Gettleman from Stevenson golf recorded six birdies to finish three under and helped her team secure its first CCS title in 18 years.  Monterey Herald
