COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Salinas is asking for nominations for the future Salinas Legends Walk of Fame, a project meant to honor local figures who shaped the community. The design and timeline are still being planned and must be approved by the Salinas City Center Board (the group in charge) before it moves forward.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas volunteer organization Dorothy's Place is asking residents to donate shelf-stable foods like pasta and canned chicken as SNAP benefits remain delayed—donations can be made through their Amazon wishlist or cash donation page. The nonprofit, which started in 1982 and expanded in 2015 to offer meals and support services, helps local families in need—strengthening community resources in tough times.  KSBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mike Hackett’s family-run cannabis farm in Monterey County once thrived after legalization but saw a steep decline as production fell 43% and tax revenue dropped 80% between 2021 and 2024 — forcing him to consider closing the operation. He said shutting down the farm — which still sells every pound despite falling prices — would put 60 full-time jobs at risk.  KSBW

  • This month, top live shows in Salinas and nearby areas include Cheap Trick—featuring Olive Vox—performing at the Golden State Theatre on Nov. 11 and a Tribute Night to The Eagles at Fox Theater on Nov. 22, with Built to Spill in Santa Cruz, Trianna Feruza at Folktale Winery, and Samantha Fish with Robert Jon & The Wreck at Felton Music Hall rounding out the list.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pajaro Valley Unified School District is proposing budget cuts that may eliminate over 150 jobs—including mental health counselors, reading intervention teachers and special education aides—as enrollment declines and one-time COVID funds run dry. A board meeting to discuss the proposal is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Watsonville City Council Chambers and union leaders have requested more time to negotiate.  KSBW
  • The Scholar's Cup at Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley has supported Monterey County students with college and vocational training scholarships for 17 years—last year, 31 students received scholarships and organizers hope to raise at least $200,000 this year to fund four-year scholarships. The tournament, hosted by the Quail Men's Golf Association, continues to grow and change lives in the community.  KSBW

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • EAH Housing and Veterans Transition Center of California opened Lightfighter Village in Marina on Nov. 7—an affordable housing community with 71 units for veterans earning 30% to 50% of the area’s median income. The development is located on the former Fort Ord site and is within two miles of transportation, shopping, and medical services.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Justin Pascone from Hartnell football became the 25th player to rush for over 1,000 yards by gaining 286 yards and scoring two touchdowns in a season-ending win over Gavilan—earning him College Athlete of the Week honors while several other players received honorable mentions.  Monterey Herald
  • The top 10 girls’ tennis rankings list Carmel as first, Stevenson as second, Aptos as third, Santa Catalina as fourth, Soquel as fifth, Pacific Grove as sixth, Santa Cruz as seventh, Hollister and North Salinas as eighth, and Monte Vista as tenth—while the bubble list includes Salinas, Monterey, Rancho San Juan, Alisal and Notre Dame.  Monterey Herald
  • Final top 10 girls’ golf rankings were released with Stevenson first, Carmel second, Santa Catalina third, Scotts Valley fourth, Hollister fifth, Salinas sixth, Aptos seventh, Pacific Grove eighth, Soquel ninth, and Monte Vista tenth. Watsonville, North County, Alisal, Monterey and King City remain on the bubble — showing a tight contest for the remaining spots.  Monterey Herald
