CULTURE NEWS

  • Alison van Diggelen released 'The Love Project' on Oct. 1 — a book that gathers 30 intimate love stories from Carmel — which is now available in local bookstores and on Amazon.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Salinas is forecast to stay in the low to mid 80s today—while inland areas may approach 90 degrees later this week, and a chance of rain is expected on Thursday with clouds lingering over the weekend.  KSBW
  • Tom Karwin writes that local gardeners are cultivating Pacific Coast irises—commonly called Pacificas—and are preparing to divide and transplant them in late fall for healthy growth. He also notes that garden enthusiasts can look forward to events such as the Fall Orchid Market and a meeting on November 16 for talks on plant care.  Monterey Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Realtor.com data from August showed that home prices in Monterey County fell from $1,095,000 in July to $925,000, a drop of 15.5%; single-family homes dropped 7.7% + condos and townhomes fell 43.1%. A total of 191 homes were sold for $257 million, which is an 11.6% decrease from August 2024.  The Californian

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Pacific Coast Athletic League announced its all-league volleyball teams for Santa Lucia, Cypress, Mission and Gabilan divisions—highlighting MVP and top player awards with selections from local schools like Oakwood, Notre Dame and Monterey Bay Academy. The lists include first and second teams along with all-sportsmanship honors that recognize excellence in play.  Monterey Herald
  • Thousands finished the Monterey Bay Half Marathon Sunday along a coastal route from Del Monte Avenue to Fisherman’s Wharf. Ero Doce won the men’s race in 1:03:47 while Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge took the women’s title and local runner Salvador Chavarin (27) improved his time (a new personal record).  Monterey Herald
  • Seven teams have been seeded into the CCS football playoffs as Carmel takes the No. 2 seed in DIII and Palma the No. 4 seed in Open, joining Alisal, King City, North Salinas, Salinas and Stevenson. This seeding will set up competitive matchups in the postseason.  Monterey Herald
