- ➤ The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced that Cookie—a 15-year-old miniature horse rescued from a Texas kill pen—will be sworn in as an Honorary Community Ambassador today; her gentle nature has made her a symbol of compassion and she will make her first appearance at Salinas Farm Day on November 6 at the Sports Complex. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After a month of work, the John Steinbeck Library reopened on Monday with new laminate and carpet floors and rearranged shelves that now make a local history nook while keeping its familiar orange, green, yellow and blue colors. The library was built in 1959 and later renamed for the Salinas writer, and staff plan a mural featuring Steinbeck—public input will help shape future improvements. Monterey Herald

- ➤ Barry Dolowich, a local CPA, advised residents on which records to keep when preparing to sell a home — his guidelines outline retention periods for items like bank reconciliations, tax documents, and key business records. - ➤ The top girls’ golf rankings rank Stevenson first, Carmel second, Santa Catalina third, Scotts Valley fourth, Hollister fifth, Aptos sixth, Salinas seventh, Soquel eighth, Pacific Grove ninth and Monte Vista tenth—Watsonville, North County, Alisal, Monterey and King City are on the bubble. - ➤ Carmel High School's Ava Staehle is the top goal scorer on the Central Coast and is ranked third in the nation for girls' field hockey — she credits her success to her passion for the game and the support of her teammates and coaches. KSBW
- ➤ Teams from Carmel and Salinas advanced into the CCS flag football semifinals in their divisions after winning their playoff games — setting the stage for a fierce battle in the finals. Monterey Herald
- ➤ College Athlete of the Week honored Julian Vargas from Hartnell men’s cross country and Yasmin Avalos from Hartnell women’s soccer; Vargas returned after 18 months away from competition and won the Coast Conference finals by 69 seconds, while Avalos scored a hat trick and added five assists to help her team win their eighth match. Other college athletes were given honorable mention for their standout efforts. Monterey Herald
- ➤ Santa Catalina and Palma advanced to the DV semifinals in the CCS volleyball playoffs – they posted wins in Division V to remain the county's last two teams in contention. Monterey Herald
- ➤ The Stevenson girls golf team won their first CCS section title in 18 years with a 15-stroke win over Valley Christian, ending the rival team's four-year run. They will hoist their trophy on Tuesday and compete at the Northern California championships at Berkeley Country Club. Monterey Herald
