EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hartnell College inducted eight former athletes, three supporters and one team into its Athletic Hall of Fame last week (including the late Jim Stireman who earned All American honors and former coach Ron Critchfield). Other honorees from soccer, track and softball were recognized for their impact on the college's athletic programs.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MRMAlliance.org is a new website that helps locals care for western monarch butterflies by offering volunteer opportunities, school lessons, and garden tips (using native plants). The Monterey Regional Monarch Alliance created the site after working with local groups to help the declining butterflies recover.  Monterey Herald
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium rescued a six-month-old sea otter found on San Carlos Beach in July and treated her for a serious parasite infection called AP that has harmed many otters over the years. A Stanford study showed otter pups feeding on mole crabs in sandy areas face more risk and improved care allowed her to recover and be released in September—offering hope for better future treatments.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Liza Horvath, a senior advocate at Monterey Trust Management, explains that pickleball offers seniors an easy way to stay active and boost memory by burning calories and raising heart rates. She adds that the game's smaller court and simple rules make it a great option for those seeking a new form of exercise and social connection.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Stevenson routed Alvarez to improve their record to 9-0 — Seaside outscored Marina and Trinity earned its first winning season in nine years.  Monterey Herald
  • At Toro Park, the PCAL cross country race took place over 3 miles where Salinas won the Gabilan boys division with Tomas Rey-Avila finishing in 15:33 + Hollister won the Gabilan girls division with Prienna Chavez finishing first; winners in the Mission, Cypress and Santa Lucia divisions were also noted.  Monterey Herald
  • The Monterey Herald released top five water polo rankings for boys and girls. The boys ranking lists Soquel, Santa Cruz, Carmel, Stevenson, and Pacific Grove with Salinas on the bubble while the girls ranking names Soquel, Stevenson, Aptos, Santa Cruz, and Santa Catalina with Monterey, Hollister, and Pacific Grove on the bubble — showing strong competition among the teams.  Monterey Herald
  • MPC was humbled at Modesto for their third straight loss while Hartnell snapped an 11-game conference skid as Justin Pascone rushed for 286 yards. The game added pressure on MPC as Hartnell built momentum for future contests.  Monterey Herald
