  • A 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Central Coast early Thursday at 1:14 a.m. about 9 miles from San Simeon with a depth of 3.4 miles—officials advised residents to sign up for emergency alerts—no injuries were reported.  KSBW

  • Monterey County will host many events from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6 — a listening session at San Lucas Elementary on Nov. 3, a Board of Supervisors meeting in Salinas with Election Day voting closing at 8 p.m. on Nov. 4, a Regional Housing Summit and Pacific Grove City Council meeting on Nov. 5, and a forum on zero-emission transport at Castroville Library with a school board meeting on Nov. 6.  Monterey County Now
  • Walmart confirmed that all its California stores will remain open on Nov. 1—debunking TikTok rumors of shutdowns tied to SNAP cuts amid the federal government shutdown. California officials are boosting food access with emergency funding and expanded food bank services throughout the state.  The Californian
  • Over 50,000 Monterey County residents will lose SNAP benefits in November when federal funds are not released amid a government shutdown, with more than half being children. County officials urge residents to keep applying and recertifying for food assistance while the Food Bank for Monterey County expects a surge in demand—impacting many local families.  The Californian

HEALTH NEWS

  • Covered California’s open enrollment will begin November 1 and run through January 31; Californians can sign up for, renew, or change their health plans during this period. Health premiums are estimated to jump 97% for more than 1.7 million customers if Congress does not extend tax credits beyond the end of 2025—putting many at risk of losing coverage.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five county high school teams were seeded in the first ever CCS flag football playoffs (a historic move in local sports) and officials said the playoff matchups will boost competition this season.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas will defend its CCS Division I volleyball title in the playoffs after earning the No. 2 seed — Rancho makes its first playoff appearance and North County ended an 18-year drought — as the teams are set to compete next week.  Monterey Herald
  • The San Francisco Giants introduced Tony Vitello as their new manager on Thursday, and he recalled two special summers in Salinas when he played and coached local baseball — experiences that shaped his love for the game and his leadership style. Vitello said his time with host mom Debrah Cole and the friendly fans helped him learn about the Giants organization.  KSBW
  • King City High School clinched its first playoff berth in 19 years with a 28-0 win over Greenfield, and the team will now prepare for postseason play. The victory marks a historic turnaround for the school as it heads into the upcoming tournament.  Monterey Herald
