COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monterey County is hosting a series of free events from today through October 29, including a vacation rental webinar from 1 to 2 p.m. today, a health fair at Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center on October 25, and a food security conversation at Monterey Public Library the same day. Additional events include a mental health listening session on October 27, a Planning Commission meeting at 9 a.m. on October 29 to discuss local projects, and a job fair later that day in Salinas (all with details provided by the county).  Monterey County Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Airlines will start a nonstop flight from Monterey to Chicago next May using a new Boeing 737 Max 8 on Saturdays with 162 seats (with Wi‑Fi) for travelers. Monterey Regional Airport is also building a new terminal that will repurpose current space to include Woody's (a local favorite) to support more travel.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is launching a re-entry resource center next to the jail today to help former inmates and their families with mental health, housing, clinical services, substance use treatment, and employment referrals—its ribbon-cutting at 9:30 a.m. will be followed by a job and resource fair inside the jail until 1 p.m. with support from over 50 nonprofits and more than 150 volunteers.  KSBW
  • Pajaro Valley Unified School District has delayed its decision on updating classroom policies for controversial issues, leaving the outcome uncertain—Governor Gavin Newsom announced he will send the National Guard to support food banks.  KAZU

  • Carmel and Monterey—two competitive teams—are playing today to keep their playoff hopes alive. Carmel quarterback Kaleb Herro, who has thrown 15 touchdowns this season, leads his team as Monterey must secure a strong performance.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas clinched its 17th straight playoff spot on October 23rd—Gonzales made a two-point conversion to beat Marina—and the win maintained the team's postseason hopes.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas graduate Nyziah Hunter—leading Nebraska in receiving yards and touchdowns—is having a strong start in the team's first seven games this fall. His performance is drawing attention as he helps boost Nebraska's play this season.  Monterey Herald
