COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CheapInsurance.com offered Halloween car safety tips, urging Salinas drivers to slow down, stay alert for children in dark costumes, and avoid distractions (to help prevent accidents) while heading to trick-or-treat events. They also recommended checking vehicle lights and tires (to fend off potential vandalism) so cars are ready for a safe night on the road.  KION
  • The Lettuce Run Club, with the Rotary Club of Salinas Valley, is hosting its first 3K & 5K race at Borchard Farms on Sunday to raise money for student literacy programs. More than 150 people have registered, and the races will start at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Taylor Swift wore a vintage Monterey Bay Aquarium t-shirt in a movie which led her fans to donate over $2 million to support sea otter programs. The aquarium re-issued a limited supply of the t-shirt for conservation efforts + is planning further fundraising.  Monterey Herald
  • Nearly 200 Monterey County artists are opening their studios for a free self-guided tour this weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday—this event lets the community view a range of artworks and live demonstrations as part of the Open Studios Art Tour.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PG&E has proposed a rate increase that will raise the average cost by $144 a year in 2027 for customers using 500 kWh, and rates may be $408 higher by 2030. Customers can join remote public hearings on Oct. 22 and 23 before the CPUC judge, and an in-person hearing is set for Nov. 7 in Fresno (at the Hugh Burns State Building).  KSBW

  • Fremont Elementary School in Salinas unveiled its new classroom buildings, playground structures and tarmac on Oct. 15 after years of construction + the state-of-the-art facilities were funded by Measure M.  The Californian

  • Attorney Dennis Beaver told an 85-year-old Salinas reader to add a spendthrift clause to his trust to keep nearly $1 million safe from his son Abel's debts. He warned that free trust seminars use hard sales tactics (often aimed at older people) and urged hiring an experienced estate attorney (instead of falling for a scam).  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County Behavioral Health launched a Community Health Survey open until Oct. 31 to gather local input on mental health, substance use, and housing needs for its three-year services plan— the survey is available in English and Spanish with upcoming in-person and virtual listening sessions. A job and resource fair is scheduled today from 1 to 4 p.m. at Northridge Mall in Salinas while county officials prepare for a Nov. 4 special election with mailed ballots and improved check-in procedures.  Monterey Herald
