- ➤ Four hotels earned Michelin Keys for excellent hospitality in Monterey County. Villa Mara Carmel received its first one-key award while Bernardus Lodge and Spa retained three keys and Post Ranch Inn and Ventana Big Sur earned three and two keys respectively (hotel managers said the awards reflect hard work by their staff). - ➤ The Monterey Tequila Festival returns on Oct. 18 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Monterey. The event will begin with educational tasting sessions from 3-4 p.m., followed by tequila and mezcal tastings and an after party with Anthony Lane and The Chicano All Stars Band — it will also support Rancho Cielo and HYS Incorporated. - ➤ Gov. Gavin Newsom signed bill AB 1454, which uses evidence-based reading instruction—teaching phonics and vocabulary—to help students improve on spring test scores. The law, co-authored by Salinas Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, builds on more than $600 million in literacy investments and is aimed at closing achievement gaps in California classrooms. - ➤ Salinas Community Science Workshop on Wheels is a mobile science lab that will park outside Cesar Chavez Library on Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. to let up to 30 local children explore science using crafts, tools and donated bicycles—offering hands-on learning for underserved communities. - ➤ The Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency outlined a plan on Thursday to treat and pump water back into the basin to stop seawater intrusion, with costs estimated at $700M–$1B and unclear funding sources.
