- ➤ Community Alliance for Safety and Peace held its annual march and cruise for peace on Saturday in east Salinas — families, students and local leaders gathered at Acosta Plaza carrying handmade signs to show hope and support violence prevention efforts. The Californian
- ➤ The California International Airshow Salinas, with the mayor, the board of supervisors, and the principal of Everett Alvarez High School, proclaimed October 4 as Everett Alvarez Jr. Day in Monterey County. Salinas native Alvarez—who was the first naval aviator shot down in Vietnam and spent time in a prisoner-of-war camp—was honored in a ceremony attended by his family. KSBW

- ➤ The Salinas United Business Association will dissolve by the end of the year after 20 years of serving local business owners due to economic struggles and low dues collections. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Monterey County approved more than $1 million to finish a homeless navigation center in Watsonville—designed to help move people from the Pajaro Riverbed into long-term housing. The project, led by nonprofit Dignity Moves and partnered with Santa Cruz County and the city of Watsonville, will be fully open next month to cover rising construction costs and keep the work on schedule. - ➤ The California Supreme Court held a special session at Colton Hall Museum (site of California’s first constitutional convention in 1849) on Wednesday, where local students asked questions during four oral arguments. The public session continued the court’s tradition of open proceedings in Monterey County. Monterey Herald
- ➤ Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill making Diwali an official statewide holiday—public schools and community colleges will close and state employees can opt for paid leave starting Jan. 1—with the law also recognizing Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. KSBW
