COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salinas airshow starts today with Maverick's Lounge and a fireworks show at the airport—but it will not feature the Blue Angels or U.S. military flights due to a government shutdown. Organizers say civilian jets, a demonstration by Joby and Archer Aviation, and a historic World War II P-51 will fly along with STEM exhibits, a kids' zone, and food vendors.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, officials held a ribbon cutting to open the Pure Water Monterey expansion that now gives the Peninsula more than 60% of its water supply and raises capacity from 5 million to 7.6 million gallons a day. The project is funded with state dollars, grants, and a US EPA WIFIA loan and treats wastewater to lower ocean discharges—boosting the environment and the economy.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new California law now limits HOA fines to $100 per violation—boards cannot add late fees or extra charges except for health and safety reasons. Lawmakers say this change protects homeowners, though some board members worry it weakens their ability to enforce community rules.  The Californian
  • Monterey-Salinas Transit began work on the SURF! Busway project, a 6-mile bus-only corridor along the Monterey Branch Line right-of-way from Marina through Sand City and Seaside—designed to reduce congestion and cut emissions. The project is part of a plan to improve transit connections and air quality on the Monterey Peninsula.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas volleyball team — the reigning two-time Central Coast Section Division I champions — won five straight games after sweeping defending Gabilan Division champion Carmel, while teams like Carmel and Santa Cruz remain close in the rankings.   • Villanova defeated No. 22 ranked UConn 2-1 as Lorenzo Avalos scored his first collegiate goal—his game-winner—for the men’s soccer team. The Salinas-raised sophomore, who played for the San Jose Earthquakes Academy, logged all 90 minutes to help keep Villanova unbeaten in the Big East.  Monterey Herald
