- ➤ On July 27, a white male was filmed using a hunting knife to decapitate a sea lion that was already dead at Point Pinos Beach in Pacific Grove—after a local resident challenged him, federal authorities offered a $20,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest. Monterey Herald

- ➤ GRIDLIFE is a festival at Laguna Seca that mixes drifting and live music—created by founder Chris Stewart in 2013—and features drifter Matt Coffman who says the event brings the community together. KSBW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Trash piles near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Salinas have attracted rats, maggots and other pests, causing a serious health hazard as residents said the smell had become unbearable. City officials and Union Pacific stressed that only a coordinated cleanup effort will keep the area safe—residents must dispose of garbage properly. KSBW
- ➤ Vistra contractors under EPA oversight are removing damaged batteries from the Moss Landing battery plant—damaged by a fire eight months ago—and the cleanup will continue until late next year with batteries de-energized on site and recycled in Nevada. - ➤ Marina is closing Abrams Drive on the north side of Imjin Parkway on Wednesday or Thursday from 8 a.m.—4 p.m. and the right turn lane on northbound Reservation Road on Thursday from 9 a.m.—4 p.m. as work continues on a two-year project to widen the road and add roundabouts for the 30,000 daily drivers. - ➤ Advocates in Monterey County are urging the state to tighten pesticide regulations after a study showed more than half of pregnant women were exposed to dangerous chemicals, raising health risks for families near agricultural fields. Community leaders gathered Tuesday outside the Monterey County Government Center and local health experts warned that heavy use of organophosphates—linked to developmental issues—adds serious safety concerns.
