BUSINESS NEWS

  • Joby Aviation, a company developing air taxis for commercial passenger service, will be at the California International Airshow in Salinas on Oct. 4 and 5—where attendees can explore the aircraft cabin and meet the design team. The company recently completed its first flight between Marina and Monterey and will prepare for flight tests in early 2026.  KSBW
  • Salinas Starbucks on John and Monterey Streets closed on Friday—its last day after being open for just over a year, leaving the city with 16 stores. A new location on Abbott Street is planned with construction set to start in 2026.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pianist Christian Sands, 36, has been named the 2025 Commission Artist for Monterey Jazz Festival and will debut his six-piece work, Reflections from the Shore: A Monterey Suite, at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28 + he has toured worldwide, earned a Grammy nomination, and served as Artist-in-Residence, bringing his old-soul sound to the festival.  Monterey County Now
  • At the Monterey Jazz Festival, Friday’s shows with John and Gerald Clayton and other acts were held as fans enjoyed a mix of acoustic and modern jazz, and today Dianne Reeves sings at Jimmy Lyons Stage to delight local music lovers. Tomorrow, high school bands and veteran musicians will perform — adding more great jazz for the community.  Monterey County Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Transportation Department tightened rules so that non-citizens without H-2a, H-2b, or E-2 visas cannot get commercial licenses after three fatal crashes linked to faulty licenses. The department said California must fix its program within 30 days or lose $160 million in funds — a move to keep roads safe.  Monterey Herald
  • The Salinas City Council left the decision on renter protection laws to voters — the law may appear on the upcoming ballot. A local doctor from Montage Health urges residents to get vaccinated ahead of respiratory virus season.  KAZU

  • Today, Soquel beat Salinas 41—24 to extend its regular season winning streak to 13.  Monterey Herald
  • In Hollister vs. Alisal High School football Week 4, Alisal quarterback Jayden Duarte recovered a loose ball after a bad snap and stiff-armed two defenders before connecting with Jordan Garcia for a touchdown as he finished with five scores even though his team lost 44-40 with two seconds left. The play of the week — a stunning scramble moment — captured attention in a game filled with excitement.  KSBW
