  • Mary Jeanne Vincent interviewed two professionals who have changed their careers. Former NFL player Greg Amsler left football to study landscape design and work on golf courses — he later started an internet marketing company after his daughter was born, and Cheryl Gillette went from child acting to roles in law and at Disney — showing that new skills can lead to new career paths.  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pajaro residents will soon get the final phase of state disaster relief for flood recovery after the devastating levee breach in March 2023. Community Bridges will manage extra direct assistance starting in October — households with updated contact info should notify officials.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rep. Panetta reintroduced the bipartisan REAL Health Providers Act on September 22 to require Medicare Advantage plans to update their provider directories annually starting in 2026 — a move aimed at reducing delays and surprise costs for patients. A review found that many listings held inaccurate or unreachable numbers, which affected seniors and others needing timely care.  Monterey Herald

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In Monterey County, home listings in August showed a median price of $1,299,000—down 1.5% from last month. The median home size was 1,899 square feet at $736 per square foot, and homes stayed on the market for a median of 59 days with 236 new listings added.  The Californian

  • Freshman quarterback Simon Manuel Lopez (MPC) threw for 238 yards and four touchdowns as his Lobos earned a 41 to 14 win over Laney and improved to a 4 to 0 record.  Monterey Herald
  • Local athletes are making strong moves this season as JT Byrne of Carmel High has joined Georgia Tech and helped secure a game-winning drive over Clemson—his sister Caroline is powering through with top kills for Middlebury College while Salinas’ Nathan Martorella prepares for the Miami Marlins Triple-A playoffs in Jacksonville today, and Mailin Orozco increases her play time for Santa Clara University.  Monterey Herald
