- ➤ After strong community feedback, the Castroville Artichoke Festival returns to its original home in Castroville after a decade in Monterey. Organizers said the event will offer two versions next year — a lighter version during current construction and a larger celebration when work ends in about a year. KSBW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The USGS reported a 7.8 earthquake struck off Kamchatka on September 18 at 11:58 a.m. PDT—authorities are now evaluating the tsunami threat for Pacific coastal areas in North America. More updates will be provided as the study continues. KSBW
- ➤ Researchers from Moss Landing Marine Labs are examining heavy metal deposits from the January battery fire in Monterey County, and residents remain frustrated by limited details on health risks — they hope the study will clarify future impacts. KAZU
- ➤ Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute discovered a pink snailfish with a bumpy body 10,718 feet deep near Monterey Bay — its unique traits may help researchers learn how life survives in the deep sea. - ➤ California updated its laws to let pharmacies give all vaccines based on state recommendations after Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy replaced the 17-member panel with a new group that includes vaccine skeptics as part of a health alliance with Oregon, Washington and Hawaii—pharmacies along the central coast offer flu shots and expect covid shots by month end. - ➤ Salinas High senior golfer Max Perez will compete in the PURE Insurance Championships in Pebble Beach this week—representing First Tee Monterey County. Monterey Herald
- ➤ At Pinto Lake — a 2.9 mile course — the PCAL cross country meet featured two divisions where in the Gabilan Division Monte Vista won the boys team title and Alisal won the girls team title as Fernando Herrera and Yaretzi Cornelio finished first individually. - ➤ Community colleges MPC-Laney and Hartnell-Feather River are previewing upcoming sports events; MPC running back David Roberts is expected to return to the lineup this week — his comeback may boost his team’s play. Monterey Herald
- ➤ Monterey Bay F.C. named new CEO Mike Sheehan (a veteran with 30 years’ sports management experience) (a day after the president said he would resign at the end of the year) and owner Ray Beshoff said the club will work to grow its presence on the Monterey Peninsula. KSBW
