- ➤ PG&E is giving a $30,000 grant to United Way Monterey County to expand the county's 211 service that handled over 13,300 calls and 19,000 referrals in 2024—helping residents access food, shelter, and health care. KION
- ➤ Several free community events are planned in Monterey and Salinas from Sept. 19th to Sept. 27th. Monterey will host Parking Day on Alvarado Street on Sept. 19th, a Recovery Run and Repair Cafe on Sept. 20th, and a stormwater test event called First Flush on Sept. 24th, 25th, and 27th while Salinas holds a Renter Rights workshop and State of Salinas Address on Sept. 25th—offering local residents many ways to participate. - ➤ United Way Monterey County honored KSBW's Dan Green with a Community Impact Award at the 25th Annual Community Breakfast in Salinas Wednesday morning—where he received a standing ovation for 25 years of service and will mark 30 years with KSBW in October. KSBW

- ➤ Local youth artists from Hijos Del Sol Arts are painting a large mural on Salinas Road to honor Pajaro’s strength after a 2023 flood and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month—partnering with Community Bridges, they depict Mother Earth rising from the Pajaro River with the project set to take two months. - ➤ PG&E will add a $58.23 California Climate Credit to customers' October power bills as part of the cap-and-trade program; businesses will also see a combined total of more than $183 credited for 2025. KSBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Monterey Peninsula Unified School District starts its day at 5:30 a.m. by cooking scratch meals with fresh, local ingredients for thousands of students, and the district plans to build a central kitchen soon to reach its goal of serving 100% scratch-cooked food — 90% sourced locally. KSBW
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Del Rey Woods Elementary in Seaside, a 2000 square foot Miyawaki Forest is being developed next to the playground to become a dense living ecosystem over the next 5 to 10 years. Local experts and school officials tested soil and plant methods in April and will start the main planting on Oct. 20—offering students a hands-on lesson in native ecosystems. Monterey County Now

- ➤ On Wednesday, the Monterey Peninsula Airport District unanimously voted to repeal three noise ordinances from the 1970s, removing rules on flight curfews, altitude, and touch-and-go circuits—neighbors say the change will lead to increased aircraft disruptions. KSBW
- ➤ Representatives from the EPA in Salinas updated the public on cleanup efforts at Moss Landing Battery Energy Storage Facility after a fire earlier this year. Vistra Energy has been tasked with removing batteries and debris over a process that will last more than a year with phased demolition planned until the end of next year — the hazardous batteries will be sent to a special site near Reno. - ➤ The West Coast Health Alliance has released new vaccine advice for the 2025–26 winter season to protect against COVID-19, flu and RSV. Leaders from California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii and top health groups say vaccines should be safe and easy to get so local families can lower the risk of serious illness—clear guidance to help keep the community healthy. - ➤ Monterey Bay F.C. president Mike DiGiulio announced on Wednesday that he will resign at the season's end—he thanked supporters and club owner Ray Beshoff praised his role in building the team. The club, which is last in the USL Western Division, may struggle to make the playoffs. KSBW
