CULTURE NEWS

  • Lighthouse Cinema in Pacific Grove reopens its doors Friday after new owner Dr. Ayman Adeeb spent between $1.3 and $1.5 million to renovate the historic building purchased for $2.3 million—updating floors, lights, bathrooms, seats, and a full concession stand with food and tap beer. An open mic event will be held today at 6:30 p.m. ahead of a Casablanca-themed grand opening scheduled from 4 to 9.  KSBW
  • Alvarado Street Brewery will host its largest ticketed Oktoberfest on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Colton Hall’s historic lawn in Monterey—attendees will sample lagers from up to 20 breweries, enjoy live music, and take part in contests and games. The event will highlight local and out-of-state beer makers while partnering with a nonprofit to bring the community together.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Salinas Adult School has been selected to participate in El Grito on Alisal Street in Salinas and Independencia de Mexico in Greenfield. The all-female honor guard trained for two weeks and includes six members led by commander Araceli Arredondo — the first Monterey County school to join the event.  KSBW
  • Students at California State Monterey Bay reported ongoing housing problems such as pest infestations, water damage, and caving ceilings that disrupted their studies and daily routines. A CSUMB spokesperson said the school responds quickly to reported issues (students are urged to report any further problems), yet many remain frustrated.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • EPA officials said the cleanup for the battery fire at the Vistra Energy facility in Moss Landing may take up to two years because more than half of the batteries were destroyed and the remaining ones could spark another fire if exposed to rain—crews will carefully move undamaged batteries to a safe area and demolish the unsafe structure. Concerned neighbors have asked for more information about potential contaminants in the debris.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church proposed an RV parking prohibition along Railroad Avenue in Pajaro during Tuesday’s meeting to address vehicle abatement and improve street access. Some locals, including current RV dwellers, expressed concerns that the proposal might force them to move — the board will review options next month — while others support the change.  KION
  • Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) said it still awaits a permit extension from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for the Fort Ord Regional Trail project in Del Rey Oaks, which may push the Canyon Del Rey Segment completion to mid-2027.  Monterey Herald

  • A top 10 football ranking list released today shows Salinas is ranked third after a game where they rushed for nearly 300 yards and threw four touchdown passes. The rankings also name teams like Soquel, Palma and Monterey—highlighting key performance trends in the Central Coast Section.  Monterey Herald
