CULTURE NEWS

  • KSBW 8 is airing stories in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15—showcasing Hispanic American contributions along the Central Coast. EDUCATION NEWS

  • At least 171 California colleges, including Hartnell, Cabrillo, Gabilan College, UC Santa Cruz and Cal State Monterey Bay, are losing millions in funding after the federal government ended $350 million in grants for Hispanic-serving institutions — the U.S. Department of Education said the grants only helped schools with high Latino enrollment.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Central Coast is facing rising temperatures that are driving fire weather concerns as inland highs are expected to reach the mid-80s to upper 90s. Dry thunderstorms and lightning-induced ignitions may occur later this week—officials will closely monitor conditions for further updates.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Central Coast State Sen. John Laird’s bill will require tougher emergency plans and fire hazard inspections for battery storage systems and is headed to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk. Water pumps and sprinklers have kept giant sequoias safe during the Garnet Fire in Sierra National Forest.  KAZU

  • Dylan Medler won the Trofeo Pirelli division at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as he moved from third to first, passing championship leader Massimo Perrina in a race marked by late crashes and tough competition.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas High quarterback Michael Andrade threw four touchdown passes as he scrambled for a key play — passing to Hovan Lusk who juked defenders for a touchdown — to help his team secure a 35-22 win over North Salinas.  KSBW
