CRIME NEWS

  • Andrea Sandoval, 35, from Marina, pleaded not guilty to murder after she was arrested at the Salinas courthouse during a pretrial conference for an unrelated drug case, and her preliminary hearing for the fentanyl overdose death of 23-year-old mariachi player Julian Sanchez—found near 200 Lodge Lane with stolen belongings—is set for September 18 at 8:30 a.m. with bail set at $1,000,000.  KSBW
  • Salinas police said a potential hand grenade was donated to the Goodwill Central Coast Outlet at 1566 Moffett Street Monday morning—Monterey County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad is on scene and the explosive did not detonate.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Jeanne Vincent (a career expert from Monterey) attended a workshop this week on using AI to help English language learners improve literacy and job search skills. She explained that companies use chatbots and resume optimization tools to sort candidates and that job seekers will benefit from these tools when paired with personal coaching.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuations remained in place Monday for areas near the border of Monterey and Fresno counties after the Salt 14-2 Fire began and spread to 25,580 acres near Jacalitos Creek Road, prompting road closures on Oak Street and Parkfield Grade. A total of 1,679 firefighters worked to boost containment to 35% while a cooling trend produced drops in temperature that may allow winds to pick up—residents in affected zones are advised to watch for updates.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monterey County became the first in California to receive BlueZone certification— it partners with local schools, grocery stores, and restaurants to help residents live healthier lives. County leaders say the program will boost community wellness and may lead to longer lifespans.  KSBW
  • Coastal Kids Home Care is renovating its headquarters in Salinas and expanding services thanks to a large donation that allows the non-profit to serve more pediatric patients—this change will add new counseling rooms and a state-of-the-art physical therapy facility as it plans to extend care across more counties in Northern California.  KSBW
  • Families gathered at Salinas Valley Health NICU reunion on Saturday at Ryan Ranch PrimeCare in Monterey to celebrate babies who overcame serious health challenges and to thank the medical team from Salinas Valley Health and Stanford Medicine Children's Health. The event featured carnival attractions such as bounce houses, a petting zoo, and a diaper derby — a simple tribute to hope and resilience.  KSBW
  • COVID cases have risen in California and pharmacies now offer updated vaccines that may require a prescription and cost $150 or more if insurance does not cover the shot—leaving many residents confused over conflicting guidelines from state and federal health officials. Experts warn that clear steps are needed as the fall season increases respiratory illnesses.  Monterey Herald
  • COVID-19 vaccine access remains limited in California as adults under 65 must show an underlying condition to receive the updated shot, while those 65 and older and pregnant individuals can still get vaccinated at local pharmacies or physician offices with their insurance. The flu shot is available to everyone 6 months and older, and a CDC meeting scheduled for Sept. 18-19 may change vaccine rules in the near future—so eligible residents should plan to get their shots soon.  KSBW
