  • The Monterey Bay Aquarium is offering free tickets to Monterey County residents on select dates in September and released more online for sold-out days—residents can book up to six tickets until Sept 14 and see a new program featuring playful otter Opal.  KSBW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday, a school bus carrying about 30 to 50 students collided with a semi-truck at Rogge Road and Kelton Drive in Monterey County at 8:02 a.m.—no injuries were reported.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Greenfield police arrested 19-year-old Esteban Villa-Sanchez at about 6:15 a.m. Friday while he rode the bus on gang-related warrants—he was booked into Monterey County Jail on charges including three felony warrants for gang-related crimes, carrying a loaded firearm in public, carrying a loaded firearm as a prohibited person, carrying a firearm while not the registered owner, and obstructing a public officer.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alvarado Street Brewery will hold its first Oktoberfest on September 20 on the Colton Hall Lawn in Monterey from 1 to 5 p.m.—the festival will feature over 30 guest taps from more than 20 brewers and six German-style lagers along with German food from The Meatery, music, games, local crafts and free entry for kids under 12 with a parent. General admission costs $50 and includes an old-rimmed Bamberg tankard and four beer tokens while designated driver tickets cost $15.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuation orders and warnings remained in effect on Friday for residents near the Monterey and Fresno counties border as the 17,600-acre Salt 14-2 Fire burned near Jacalitos Creek Road. Fire crews, including 1,022 personnel, built control lines and enforced road closures at Parkfield Grade on Highway 198 and Jacalitos Creek Road—protecting public safety.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cal Am filed a motion in court on September 5 asking to dismiss the water district’s lawsuit—arguing that the district lacks experience in providing drinking water on a retail platform.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas finished fourth in the top 10 boys' cross country rankings with Aptos leading and Hollister in tenth while teams such as Marina, Santa Cruz, Alisal, Monte Vista, Scotts Valley and King City also made the list. Carmel, Pacific Grove, Greenfield, Stevenson and Alvarez were on the bubble—showing a close race for top positions.  Monterey Herald
  • Salinas high school football beat Valley Christian 38-29 as tailback Brandon Palma rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns—Coach Steve Zenk said his team made key changes and will work hard for next week's game against North Salinas.  Monterey Herald
