ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Labor Day Weekend saw multiple incidents on the Central Coast as a remote-controlled plane injured two in Watsonville, a plane made an emergency landing from Salinas with minor injuries after a fuel leak, fights broke out at the Monterey County Fair resulting in increased security & a DUI head-on crash on Sunday night injured five.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are intensifying their search for David Souza, a 60-year-old man missing for over a month and believed to be a victim of foul play by examining his San Juan Bautista property with cadaver dogs and teams from Santa Clara County—investigators are checking phone and bank records and urging anyone with tips to contact the sheriff.  KSBW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Monterey Bay Economic Partnership received a $7.5 million grant to build California’s first FAA-compliant multi-airport flight corridor network linking Watsonville, Marina, Salinas, and Hollister—part of a state initiative to boost growth in space, defense, and satellites. The grant includes funds for drones and pilotless aircraft and will help create jobs on the Central Coast—supporting the local economy.  KSBW
  • On Labor Day yesterday, workers in Salinas and Watsonville gathered to protest policies that they said favored billionaires—criticizing tax cuts, healthcare cuts, and weakened worker rights. Protesters stressed that economic justice and union support are key to protecting the values the country was built on.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MIIS students learned on Thursday that their school will close and they have until Sept 15 to decide if they will stay—this brief deadline has left many feeling disappointed and uncertain about their future career guidance. Some students say supportive faculty are helping them adjust to the sudden news.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday at 1:26 p.m., a 3.9 magnitude earthquake shook homes along the Central Coast near Tres Pinos—its epicenter was 7 miles SSW with a depth of 5.6 miles, and several residents in Salinas reported feeling the tremor though no damage or injuries were reported.  KION

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California now requires local governments to inspect all publicly funded homeless shelters annually — cities that do not fix safety issues or submit reports risk losing funding or facing lawsuits, and officials will issue guidance soon.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Monterey Herald released the preseason Top 10 girls’ tennis rankings today, listing Stevenson first and including Aptos, Carmel, Santa Catalina, Pacific Grove, Monterey and Scotts Valley, plus teams on the bubble such as Salinas, Rancho San Juan, Alisal, North Salinas and Monte Vista.  Monterey Herald
