ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Evacuation orders are in effect after a lithium—ion battery fire broke out at the Parkfield Solar Plant on Turkey Flat Road, and county officials as well as Salinas fire and CAL FIRE BEU responders are monitoring the 2-mile area until further notice.  KSBW
  • The Coach Fire broke out on Old Stage Road between Monterey and San Benito Counties and is now 15 acres with potential to grow to 100 acres — fire crews are battling it from the air and ground.  KION

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Salinas High receiver Nyziah Hunter had an impressive debut with Nebraska—he made six catches for 65 yards and scored a touchdown in a win over Cincinnati last Friday by a score of 20 to 17. The 20-year-old transferred from Cal and played a key role by scoring Nebraska’s first touchdown and making a clutch 24-yard reception that set up another score.  Monterey Herald
  • Central Coast high school football featured exciting games last week as teams like the Vikings and North Salinas showed strong plays. North Salinas won 21-10 after a game ended early due to an injury—other scores included Scotts Valley's 38-0 win and solid performances from teams in King City, Santa Cruz and Monterey.  KSBW
  • The Monterey Herald released its preseason Top 10 water polo rankings for boys and girls teams today; the boys ranking places Salinas on the bubble alongside Aptos and Harbor, while top teams include Santa Cruz, Soquel, Stevenson, Carmel and Pacific Grove. The girls ranking names Soquel, Stevenson, Aptos, Santa Catalina and Santa Cruz among the leaders with Monterey, Pacific Grove and Harbor on the bubble.  Monterey Herald
  • Jayden Duarte rushed for 246 yards and scored four touchdowns as Alisal won 34 to 14 over Alvarez on August 30. His performance set a promising tone for the season opener.  Monterey Herald
  • On Saturday, Carmel defeated Soledad 34–21 as quarterback Kaleb Herro threw three touchdown passes and the defense forced five turnovers including two interceptions by Ethan Haas.  Monterey Herald
  • Monterey Bay FC lost 1-0 to Oakland Roots at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday—dropping them to 11th in the USL Western Conference. The team extended its winless streak to six games and is three points short of a playoff spot with seven matches left.  Monterey Herald
