COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local residents near three schools at the Alvin Drive—North First Street intersection warned that speeding cars and a lack of stop signs put students at risk. The City of Salinas said it cannot make changes without meeting federal guidelines and urged residents to file traffic calming requests.  KION

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Salinas approved plans for a new Chick-fil-A at 363 East Market Street — three old buildings will be demolished to build a 4,855-square-foot restaurant with dual drive-through lanes, outdoor seating, and a 75-space parking lot while a building permit remains pending.  KSBW
  • Under California law, employers with 25 or more workers must let eligible employees take up to 40 hours of unpaid leave each year for child-related activities — which include school events and emergencies — and employees must give proper notice and provide documentation when needed.  Monterey Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Monterey County Fair opened yesterday with free concerts — rides and new food stands drew many visitors under the 'Surfin' Safari' theme. Steel Pulse performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and a Selena tribute will happen on Sunday as the fair runs until Labor Day.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Taylor Fresh Foods voluntarily recalled its Taylor Farms Honey Balsamic Salad Kit 6/8.3oz after the FDA reported that the kit may contain undeclared sesame and soy allergens - the recall applies to kits in 25 states including California that have codes starting with TFRS and a Best If Used By date up to and including September 4. Consumers who have the kit should throw it away and get a refund at the store.  KION

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Salinas High pitcher Ryan Jensen re-signed with the Cubs organization—he was released by the Twins' Triple-A team in St. Paul last June. He will join the Cubs in the Arizona Complex League as he seeks to revive his baseball career.  Monterey Herald
