COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Monterey County Fair opens today at the fairgrounds with concerts, rodeo shows, carnival rides, and animal races — including pigs, sheep, ducks and geese — and offers discounts and free admission for seniors, veterans, military members and children. The event runs for five days with added food booths and new attractions to keep the Labor Day tradition lively.  Monterey Herald

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A historic milestone in specialty crop production unfolded in Salinas when The Reservoir broke ground on August 27 as the first on-farm robotics hub for startups, and it will grow celery, lettuce & strawberries while showcasing automation technology from FarmBlocks and partner John Deere. The project plans to expand its model to other regions soon.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas City Council voted Tuesday to allocate $387,000 to keep the Chinatown Navigation Center Homeless Shelter open until at least March so that about 50 people will have shelter through winter. The center was at risk in May due to a lack of funding—city leaders now search for long term housing solutions.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas was ranked second in the preseason top 10 volleyball rankings — the reigning two-time champions lost four starters to graduation but will return with a deep core under new coach Brittney Long. The list also features Harbor and Scotts Valley leading a competitive lineup among the top teams.  Monterey Herald
  • After winning four conference titles with an undefeated season, Monterey Peninsula College football team is moving to the National Division this fall. New head coach Adrian Gallegos, who replaced Ronnie Palmer, said the Lobos will recruit top players and build a stronger defense — aiming to compete better in a tougher league.  Monterey Herald
