ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A preliminary NTSB report shows that the Beech twin-engine plane, descending on an instrument approach into Monterey in late July, went too low and crashed into the water off Pacific Grove, killing pilot James Vincent and passengers Steve Clatterbuck and Jamie Tabscott—Pacific Grove has voted to install a memorial bench to honor the victims.  KSBW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mecum Monterey 2025 auction drew record attendance—500 classic and collector vehicles spurred $45 million in sales, with several cars selling for over $1 million. A rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO known as Bianco Speciale was shown to promote the upcoming 2026 Kissimmee auction and more sales are expected as deals are finalized.  KSBW

  • Monterey County will celebrate California’s 175th statehood anniversary with a historical photo exhibit at the County Government Center Lobby starting Tuesday in September and a special presentation at 10:30 a.m. by the Colton Hall Museum and Monterey County Historical Society—highlighting the county’s key role in the state’s founding.  Monterey Herald

  • Apartment listing prices in Salinas rose 4% from last year's $2,400 to $2,486 in July—Zumper data shows a 5% increase from last month's median of $2,358. One-bedroom rentals increased to $1,945 from $1,850 while two-bedroom listings stayed around $2,495.  The Californian

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CSUMB president Vanya Quiñones said in an interview that the university recovered from a seven-year enrollment slump, navigated budget cuts, and added new dorm beds while first-year and transfer applications rose, and she noted that plans to build more housing and expand workforce programs will help serve local needs—she stressed that these changes support Monterey County's future growth.  Monterey Herald

  • Yesterday, the Salinas Police Department swore in a labubu plushie named Officer Lapopo and gave it a badge—part of a call for new recruits.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health care providers report a drop in in-person visits as heightened immigration enforcement leaves immigrant patients too frightened for timely care—local clinics are now boosting telehealth services. In Salinas, Clinica de Salud del Valle is using Spanish radio ads and community training to help patients access virtual appointments safely.  Monterey Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Monterey Bay FC tied San Antonio FC 0-0 Saturday at Cardinale Stadium—earning a vital point in its playoff chase while remaining three points behind the postseason cutoff with eight games left.  Monterey Herald
  • Monterey High Toreadores are rebooting their football team after 19 seniors and 10 starters left, and coach Alex Besaw said he will build a new identity with promising players like quarterback Bronson Gulley and wide receiver Dekota Ordonio — who showed strong leadership in last season's playoff run. The team will work on filling gaps in positions and preparing for competitive games this fall.  Monterey Herald
