COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sand City West End Celebration returns on Saturday with 154 artisan vendors showcasing new creative features—The Expendables will perform at the event.  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Salinas City Council is set to revisit rent control and tenant protection laws after 10,500 verified petition signatures forced a referendum — current protections remain in place as the council meets Tuesday at 4 p.m. to set direction ahead of a final vote on Sept. 9 that will either reverse the repeal or let voters decide.  KSBW
  • Monterey County is set to decide on new rules that will end unhosted vacation rentals in Big Sur and Carmel Highlands; the California Coastal Commission approved a plan that allows hosted stays and rentals three times a year or less. The county supervisors will vote in October and if approved the changes will take effect next year—causing homeowners to worry about losing rental income.  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monterey County saw a 264% increase in Valley fever cases from 2024 to 2025 with 348 cases recorded so far—up from 47 in 2023 and 144 in 2024—as experts point to milder winters and climate change as likely causes.  KSBW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salinas graduate Nathan Martorella will spend the final month of his season with the Miami Marlins Triple-A team in Jacksonville after a strong run at Pensacola—he hit 11 home runs with 55 RBI and is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft.  Monterey Herald
  • High school football scrimmages will begin on Friday as teams in the Pacific Coast Athletic League hold controlled games to prepare for the season — Salinas will charter two buses for a Concord trip where they face top competitors. The official season starts on Thursday, Aug. 28 when Stevenson meets Rancho San Juan.  Monterey Herald
  • Palma High School’s football team—known as the Chieftains—has set a Central Coast Section record with 40 straight playoff appearances and does not fear living up to expectations as the season continues.  Monterey Herald
