EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ten student-athletes from Monterey County received $39,000 in scholarships from the Gen Giammanco Foundation to support their college athletic careers — awardees include track, volleyball, golf, football, and lacrosse players noted for state meet performances. The foundation also donated $10,000 in equipment and uniforms to local schools and will host the Gen Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 22 at Corral De Tierra Country Club.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The California Public Utilities Commission approved Cal Am Water’s plan to build a desalination plant on the Monterey Peninsula—aiming to ease a 30-year water shortage—even though 28 of 165 speakers opposed the proposal. Cal Am said they will start construction by the end of this year following a 4-0 vote with one commissioner recused.  KSBW
