- ➤ On July 26 at 7 p.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the Cesar Chavez Park area where they found 39-year-old Andres Orellana fatally shot—witnesses reported three people in dark clothing running west on N. Madeira Avenue and detectives are asking the public for help. KSBW
- ➤ Salinas police are searching for Mario Lopez Mendoza—an at risk man reported missing Wednesday and last seen July 28 whose personal belongings were left at home and whose family has not heard from him. KSBW

- ➤ Monterey Car Week begins Thursday and is set to draw 100,000 visitors as local hotels raise rates up to 400% higher than usual. For example, a Motel 6 room costs $867 on August 15 but drops to $169 on August 22 (rates vary widely among hotels). KSBW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Undergraduate students from California State Universities began the Panetta Institute for Public Policy’s 27th Congressional Internship Program Friday in a 13-week fully funded experience. The program starts with two weeks of expert-led classes and will send 25 interns to work for 11 weeks in Washington D.C.—providing 20 academic units and hands-on public service training.
