CRIME NEWS

  • A week after his arrest, more victims came forward against Salinas masseuse Anastacio Ramos Rubio, who was booked on charges of sodomy, sexual battery and practicing medicine without a license, while sheriff Tina Nieto said he operated an unlicensed massage business from his home and his bail was set at $1 million (authorities continue investigating additional reports).  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • California State Parks will host the first Lighting of the Point Sur Lighthouse open house on August 3rd—from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.—where locals can climb the historic lighthouse, enjoy pre-electric era crafts and games, and see costumed lighthouse keepers and their wives for $30 per person with provided transportation. Moonlight tours will follow on August 9th—and on September 7th at 6:45 p.m.—with limited seating and fees supporting restoration of the historic site.  KION

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hartnell College and CSUMB were named Opportunity Colleges and Universities by the Carnegie Foundation+ the designation shows they are models for helping students succeed.  Monterey Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County officials warned residents and visitors against illegal campfires in the District of Los Padres National Forest yesterday due to extreme wildfire risk. Officials said violators on public and private land faced penalties including fines up to $5,000 — a measure enforced after multiple reports of unauthorized fires — to help prevent dangerous wildfires.  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Supervisor Luis Alejo will request a new Alisal Arch for East Salinas in partnership with the City of Salinas, local rotary clubs, and community donors (the arch will display 'El Alisal'); the referral will be reviewed at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting (Aug. 5).  KION
  • A new law signed in 2024 went into effect on July 1, expanding Cal/OSHA rules to cover household domestic workers—businesses that employ housecleaners, landscapers, and others must now inspect workplaces for hazards, provide safe equipment, and offer training while workers gain the right to report unsafe conditions.  Monterey Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marine Mammal Center spokesperson reported that leptospirosis struck sea lions early this month on the Central Coast, with 100 cases confirmed. Officials noted that the kidney-damaging disease can affect dogs and humans (pet owners are urged to keep dogs leashed at the beach) and (report any sick sea lions to the center) to protect public health.  KSBW
