  • Mario Thomas Garcia, 40, from Salinas, was convicted of second‑degree murder for shooting Gabriel Gutierrez outside Jaime’s Lounge on April 5, 2024—he is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 20 and could face life in prison.  Monterey Herald

  • Farmers in Monterey County reached nearly $5 billion in gross production in 2024, but rising regulatory costs—making up about 13% of production expenses—are cutting profits and adding pressure to operations. Industry leaders, including Christopher Dunn and Norm Groot, said they need reforms in state and federal mandates to help ease these costs.  KION

  • After a $4.8 million renovation, Monterey Peninsula College reopened Little Lobos Academy preschool on Tuesday with a 96-child capacity that now gives priority to high-need students such as those facing housing insecurity and developmental delays. The campus lab school trains future educators from MPC and CSUMB — fall enrollment is open and teachers received a 40% pay bump — as part of state-funded improvements from Measure V and a state preschool grant.  Monterey Herald
