🎭 Culture
California Rodeo Salinas launches its 116th year this week with over 600 pro rodeo athletes competing in bull riding, mutton busting and freestyle bullfighting at the Sports Complex while carnival festivities run at Sun Way until Sunday.
Horse parades add extra local flair.
🏥 Health
SPCA Monterey County will host a free pet microchip and vaccine event Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SPCA Veterinary Clinic (1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway).
Pets 8 weeks and older can get a free microchip, vaccinations for $25, and dewormer for $5, SPCA manager Ben Shaw said.
The CDC recorded at least one confirmed case of cyclosporiasis in California as of July 9 amid rising cases nationwide.
Health officials advise washing produce thoroughly & practicing good hygiene to stay safe from the parasite.
📰 Real Estate
The 21st Century Road to Housing Act became law early Saturday to help ease housing costs by supporting new construction and a pilot for home repairs.
The law also limits large investors and urges local governments to adjust zoning (if approved), which could slowly affect supply for Salinas residents.
🏈 Sports
JD Beach swept the top class Superbike doubleheader at WeatherTech Raceway in Monterey this weekend by leading every lap in both races.
Meanwhile, Harley Davidson clinched a sweep (first and second place) in the Baggers class as championship battles continue at Mid Ohio from July 31 to Aug. 2.
On Sunday, three Central Coast players were picked in the 2026 MLB Draft.
Eric Segura from Soledad, the first high school draftee, was selected by the White Sox while Soquel's Jake Escalante and Monterey Peninsula College's Fabio Bundi went to the Sacramento A’s and Miami Marlins (19th and 11th rounds).
