  • Organizers postponed the Tonalli Festival scheduled for August 9—citing immigration raid concerns that have heightened fear among local immigrant families—and said refunds can be requested while a new date is planned.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said 61-year-old Bernardino Rickie Sanchez was arrested for allegedly murdering Jesús Alfonso Duarte Figueroa in April after Figueroa's body was found near the Pajaro River levee—Sanchez had already been in jail for unrelated drug and weapons charges.  KION
  • The Monterey County Sheriff's Office arrested Bernardino Sanchez, a 61 year old Pajaro resident, on murder and unlawful disposal of human remains charges after deputies found a body along the Pajaro River on April 10—several local women told reporters they believe the deceased, a 35 year old missing man, was their brother.  KSBW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Carmel Bach Festival is a two‑week event held at 11 local venues that brings together over 340 artists to share classical music with the community. Local musician Paul Dwyer will give a solo reading of 'Death and the Maiden' on July 16 and 23 while new talent Guadalupe Paz will sing in roles like Mozart’s Requiem and Bach’s Mass in the B minor, and a rare nyckelharpa performance is set for July 17 and 24 — a nod to the festival’s theme ‘Dialogues’.  Monterey County Now

  • Cal State Monterey Bay earned a 4.5-star rating on Money’s Best Colleges list — highlighting its quality education and economic mobility. University officials said the recognition comes as they improve graduation and enrollment rates while preparing students for future success.  KSBW
  • Rabbi Yochanan Friedman leads the Choices for Life self-help class at Soledad Correctional Training Facility where over 600 incarcerated men use Torah lessons to guide their choices—he said the program will expand this fall to Salinas Valley State Prison and other facilities with added modules.   • City officials announced that Salinas’ rent stabilization program remains in effect after a grassroots group collected 9,939 signatures on July 3 to delay the repeal passed by the city council in June.
