CRIME NEWS

  • Paul Flores, convicted for the murder of Kristin Smart in 2023, filed an appeal Monday in the California Second Appellate District asking to have his conviction reversed or reduced to second-degree murder due to alleged trial errors including the judge's refusal to remove a biased juror and the admission of uncharged rape incidents—attorney Solmon Wollack says these errors denied Flores a fair trial.  KSBW

  • The Hartnell College Foundation bought the CSUMB Salinas City Center in downtown Salinas from Cal State Monterey Bay and plans to create a regional event and education hub in the building. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas residents may soon vote on rent stabilization after the City Council rescinded four housing ordinances on June 3 amid mixed reactions from property owners and renters. More than 10,000 signatures were collected and submitted on July 3, and city officials must verify them—choosing between reversing the decision, calling a special election, or adding the vote to the 2026 ballot.  Monterey County Now
  • A county audit found that errors in Gonzales’ 2020 Measure K school bond tax calculations affected nearly 3,000 properties, with 850 undercharged and 2,100 overcharged over the four fiscal years from 2021 to 2025. Automatic refunds will be issued for overpayments by August and repayment plans for bills of $500 or more will begin in April (with estimated charges ranging from $150 to $1,000 per parcel).  Monterey County Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • California has required school districts to add the 988 crisis line on ID cards for students in grades 7-12 so teens know where to get help with mental health issues. Monterey County Behavioral Health said the law comes as teen anxiety and depression grew during the pandemic — and many schools still lack enough mental health professionals.  KION
