COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Yesterday morning, PG&E reported that around 3,400 homes along parts of Carmel Valley Road lost power in an unplanned outage—power was expected to be restored by 4 p.m.—leaving thousands affected.  KION
  • The all-volunteer parade committee has canceled the Veterans Day parade in Salinas this year to regroup and plan a stronger celebration in the future—volunteers may help with a smaller event at a city park.  The Californian
  • The Kiddie Kapers Parade will take place on Sunday, July 13, starting at 3 p.m. at the Salinas Recreation Center to kick off California Rodeo Salinas Big Week as more than 1,200 children ride floats, bikes, and wagons along the route. Grand Marshall Jaziel Mendoza (a pediatric cancer survivor) will lead the parade and groups will compete for prizes in eight divisions (including Playground Floats and Rolling Riders).  KION
  • California Rodeo Salinas is launching a free parking shuttle from July 16 to 20 to ease congestion during the Big Week Bull Riding Xtreme Bulls event at the Salinas Sports Complex. Guests can park at 1440 Constitution Boulevard and catch a shuttle that leaves every 15 minutes with service from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 16 to 18 and from 11:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on July 19 and 20 — a 15-minute ride each way.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • The bomb squad responded on July 8 at 11:15 a.m. to a report of a suspicious item left next to a CHP vehicle and confirmed the bag held a DVD player that posed no threat — roadways reopened after safety clearance.  Monterey Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas police veteran Luis Bravo, who has served for 25 years, was promoted to assistant police chief on Jul 8. He began his career as a reserve officer and worked in units like SWAT and the Violence Suppression Unit (born in Mexico and raised in Monterey County).  KSBW
  • Caltrans replaced an old sign with a new one in Castroville and began a rehabilitation project paid for by the state. The project has an estimated total cost of $38 million, including $20.6 million for construction & improvements are underway.  Monterey Herald
  • On Tuesday morning, the Solidarity Network reported that a person may have been detained near Dr. Oscar Loya Elementary School, and Councilmember Jose Luis Barajas noted that images suggested ICE targeted an individual; school district officials confirmed no enforcement took place on school grounds (and urged families to know their rights).  KSBW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Indigenous groups in Salinas have asked Monterey County to add permanent interpreter services at local health clinics to reduce language and cultural barriers. The proposal, based on a June pilot program and 500 patient signatures, will be reviewed by the Board of Supervisors by September.  KION
