ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Marina police say a vehicle crashed into a building at the Dunes Shopping Center on Friday after the driver experienced a medical emergency on Second Avenue—causing the car to leave the roadway, hit another vehicle and fixed objects, and rest against the building—while the driver was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment with only one injury reported.  KSBW

CRIME NEWS

  • Fresno man Luis Arthur Aragon, 38, was sentenced to eight years in state prison by Judge Andrew G. Liu for pimping, procuring for prostitution, and making criminal threats—police linked him to abuse reported on March 30 after a series of calls in Salinas.  KSBW
  • CHP confirmed a deadly crash occurred at 3:40 p.m. Friday near Highway 101 and Cannon Road when a white car on Rocks Road attempted to cross northbound lanes and was hit by a truck—killing the driver, seriously injuring the passenger and injuring the truck driver who was taken to the hospital.  KION
  • The nonprofit Cold Case Project of Monterey County (building on efforts that solved 19 cases and identified 10 remains) has been created to fund technology for law enforcement to investigate old cases as federal support ends. Board president Ann Kern said the group is now accepting donation requests (helping cover costs like DNA tests that range from $7,500 to $30,000) so local agencies can continue their investigations.  Monterey Herald
  • A man in Prunedale falsely said he saw an officer get shot at the Safeway shopping center on June 20 and nearly a dozen law enforcement units quickly responded before finding no injured officer—he was arrested near a Chevron for making a swatting call while also having three outstanding misdemeanor warrants.  KSBW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sunflower Star Lab in Moss Landing reported a breakthrough in sea star cryopreservation that could help rescue endangered sea stars which play a key role in kelp forests. The lab uses a process similar to IVF where star larvae are flash frozen and later thawed + restored to control purple sea urchins and support marine life.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monterey County Public Works will begin building a roundabout at the intersection of Carmel Valley Road and Laureles Grade on June 23 to improve traffic safety, with the project expected to take nine months until March 11. The work will occur in phases and pause during Car Week + allow two-way traffic during working hours.  KSBW
  • California SUN Bucks is offering hungry kids a $120 summer food benefit to help cover the loss of school meals. Families already in food aid programs (CalFresh, CalWORKS, or UBA) will be automatically enrolled while others need to apply by September 2 through their child's school.  KSBW
