A fire started at 1:30 a.m. last night east of Gonzales near Johnson Canyon Road and grew from a five-acre grass blaze to 11.4 acres before it was fully contained, with firefighters remaining on scene to mop up (the fire spread slowly) and check for hotspots (to keep the area safe).

Business owners in East Salinas report a drop in customer traffic as fears of immigration enforcement lead some to consider reducing their hours.
Local shop owners said that false ICE sightings on social media are reducing foot traffic during the busy harvest season—prompting law enforcement to advise caution when sharing unverified details.
🎓 Education
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District is offering free summer meals for youth ages 1-18 until the end of July—lunch is served at many school and community sites free of charge and without enrollment, paperwork, or income verification—and the sites will be closed on June 19 and July 4.
🏛️ Government
PG&E began shutting off power on the Central Coast starting Thursday to reduce wildfire risk, and 46 customers lost power (Monterey reported no outages) while restoration may not occur until Sunday.
