Good morning, Salinas. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 17th of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • CAL FIRE reported that a slow-moving fire off Elm Avenue burned 15 to 30 acres before its progress was stopped and crews worked to prevent it from spreading up to 1,000 acres — officials urged travelers to avoid the area.  KSBW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A graduation ceremony at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus in Salinas honored the Class of 2025 as disadvantaged youth received training in skills like culinary arts plus programs in ag tech, car restoration, and construction. A graduate said the program gave her a rare chance to learn and build a future while school officials noted it opens doors to new opportunities.  KSBW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Salinas leaders will vote tomorrow on a $4.8 million road repair project that aims to fix dangerous potholes using crack treatment, patching, overlay and striping—Granite Construction Company may win the local contract. If approved, construction will begin this summer and continue into fall to improve street safety.  KSBW
  • Residents in San Lucas who have gone without clean drinking water for 14 years may soon get it after Monterey County leaders approved a plan to work with CalWater. Negotiations for the $15 million project are starting—Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren has secured nearly $1 million and will ask for an extra $3.7 million to help lower monthly water bills for residents with low income.  KSBW
  • Monterey County extended a parking ban on Coast Road near Bixby Bridge on June 3 to ease congestion and help emergency vehicles. Supervisor Kate Daniels said the measure improves safety for visitors and residents—CHP enforces the ban with citations while no end date has been set.  KSBW
  • Inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison have declared a hunger strike starting Friday to protest alleged unlawful practices by CDCR, including indiscriminate lockdowns and the denial of rehabilitative rights (they claim these measures amount to collective punishment). The facility is under a modified program (with in-person visits and phone access temporarily suspended) following a rise in violent incidents, and the strike calls on legal advocates and oversight groups to review the policies.  KSBW
